This week is Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (17 May to 23 May).
Most Australian adults have a bet at some time. But for some, gambling can become a serious problem that affects not only their own lives, but the lives of their families as well. The 2009 Productivity Commission Gambling draft report found:
- Australians lost $18.2 billion on Australian gambling products in 2006-07.
- In 2007-2008, $10.1 billion was lost just on “pokies” in clubs and hotels and around $1.3 billion on "pokies” in casinos in 2007-08.
- 320,000 to 520,000 Australian adults suffer moderate to significant problems from their gambling.
- Around 15 per cent of Australian adults gamble regularly (not including Lotto and ‘scratchies’). Roughly one in ten of this group are seen as "problem gamblers", with an additional 15 per cent experiencing moderate risks.
The St Vincent's Hospital Gambling Treatment Program is staffed by Clinical Psychologists and offers a structured individually-tailored confidential treatment for individuals with problem gambling as well as partners and family members of those with problem gambling issues. Treatment is FREE, requires no referral and is open to anyone in NSW.
