One of the innumerable mailing lists I'm on is weekly hints and tips on how to save money on EVERYTHING and be a complete tightarse... I have been filing them unread for a few weeks and just went through them in a bunch...

For anyone interested in signing up it's www.simplesavings.com.au and yeah, it's actually quite a good site if you're enthusiastic about spending less on stuff and saving money...

Anyhow... some interesting bits I gleaned from this morning's reading of recent newsletters:

www.mrmcgroovys.com - instructions on how to build a cardboard castle, fire engine, and other things - supposedly for kids parties etc, but gosh they look fabulous and lots of fun and I'm saving this so that I can make myself a castle one day! The site is all about using their cardboard rivet product, but the person who sent the tip to simplesavings said they just used cable ties which worked just as well and was even cheaper!

http://www.art-on-canvas.com.au/photo.html - a site that prints artwork onto stretched canvas for a lot cheaper than most storefront places apparently do it.

www.destitutegourmet.com - budget foodery and recipes, HURRAH!

And finally, this tip from another member (not for my own interest really as I hate exercise, but i know there are a few people on my f'list who might be interested):
GET FIT WITH YOUR OWN TAFE PERSONAL TRAINER
My husband has saved over $1300 on getting fit with the help of a personal trainer! He has always longed for one to help him with an exercise plan and motivation for weight loss, but the cost was prohibitive at around $75 an hour. Then we found out that TAFE colleges have a course for personal trainers and require their students to train someone for 10 weeks as part of the course requirements. We checked with a local TAFE and signed up to be partnered with a student and before long, my husband had his very own personal trainer! He has two hour-long sessions each week for 10 weeks with his trainer. He then does one session each week on his own. In total it will cost only $165 for this personalised exercise program, including a three-month membership to the TAFE gym, where they do their workout sessions. It would cost $1500 for the same 10 week service from a fully qualified personal trainer, not including the gym fees. We have saved an amazing $1335 by using the TAFE student, who is highly motivated to help my husband achieve great results so he can pass his course. What's more, I think he will because after only five sessions, my hubby is noticing the changes in his body and feeling great!

And on a related note to the whole exercise thing, a staff member who used to work here and transferred to the hospital about 18 mths ago popped in to visit earlier this week, i haven't seen her since she went over to the hospital, and when she saw me she said "wow you have hair, and you look like you've lost weight too" and I gave the expected response of "thanks", and she then told me I should get myself to Curves gym and weight watchers, it'll knock the weight right off me. In a rare moment of self-assertiveness and confidence I told her that I like myself just fine as I am. Yay me.
